Reality is stranger than fiction」(現実は小説より面白い)

　イングランド南西部に位置するグロスターシャー州では、例年5月、春の休日に「クーパーズヒル・チーズ転がし大会」が行われます。

　大会のルールは、丘の上から丸くて大きいチーズを転がして、参加者はチーズを追いかけて走り、ゴールに最初に着いた人が勝ち。賞品としてチーズをもらいます。この大会の由来は不明ですが、少なくとも200年前から続いているとされています。

　しかし、急な斜面を下るため、観客と参加者の危険を伴うことから、公式の大会は2010年から中止になりました。それでも、地域の人の力で大会を継続しています。私は、このような昔からある地域の催しが大好きです。できるだけ安全に配慮して継続してもらいたいです。

　京田辺にも「おんごろどん」など、地域ならではの催しがあり、とても素敵だと思います。これからも長く引き継がれていってほしいと思います。

              Every year on the spring Bank Holiday in May, the Cooper’s Hill cheese rolling race takes place in Gloucestershire in the southwest of England.

　　　　　　Participants chase a round cheese down a steep hill, with the first person to the bottom winning the race. Winners receive a wheel of Gloucester cheese. The origins of the race are vague, but it has been celebrated in Gloucestershire for at least 200 years.

              However, because of fears for the safety of spectators and participants due to the steepness of the hill, the official race has been cancelled since 2010. Despite this, local people have kept the tradition alive. These kinds of traditional, local events are important, and whilst I think you need to do the best you can to ensure health and safety, it’s also important to keep traditions alive.

             I really hope that this, and other local events such as Kyotanabe’s “Ongorodon” can also continue on into the future.
