Taking a break
The cherry blossom is really pretty at the moment isn’t it?
I used to think that hanami was just having a normal picnic under a cherry tree, but when I came to Japan I was pleasantly surprised to see that actually, people have entire parties under the trees.
One of my favourite lines of poetry includes the line “What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” from the poem “Leisure” by the Welsh poet William Davies. When I think of this line, it reminds me that sometimes, taking a little time out is important. Because of this, I think that Japanese customs such as hanami and autumn leaf viewing, where nature is not only important but also enjoyed, are really quite special.
So, sometimes I take just a moment to look at the rays of the morning sun on the mountains to the east and take a deep breath before plunging back into daily life. Why don’t you give this a try sometime too?
