Reality is stranger than fiction」(現実は小説より面白い)

　新年あけましておめでとうございます。お正月はどのようにお過ごしですか。今回は、一般的なイギリスのお正月の過ごし方を紹介します。

　まず、12月31日の夜はパーティーに出掛け、カウントダウンをします。それから、みんなで「Auld　Lang　Syne（オールド　ラング　サイン）」を歌い新年を迎えます。

「Auld　Lang　Syne」はスコットランド民謡で、送別のときなどに再会を願って歌います。日本では「蛍の光」として有名なメロディーですが、歌詞はまったく違います。この曲は、多くの国々で歌詞を変えて歌われています。

そして、1月1日は日本と同じく祝日なので、前夜のパーティーの疲れを取るためにゆっくりと過ごし、翌日からの仕事に備えます。

これからも多くの方と交流して、私自身が日本文化に触れながら、みなさんにイギリスの文化をお伝えしたいと思っています。本年もどうぞよろしくお願いします。

Happy New Year! How did you spend your New Year? This month I'd like to talk about how British people spend New Year.

On the evening of the 31st of December, many people go to New Year's parties, count down to midnight and then sing Auld Lang Syne to welcome in the new year.

Auld Lang Syne is a traditional Scottish folk song which is now often sung at the end of farewell parties and at New Year's. In Japan, a song which uses the same melody is known as “Hotaru no Hikari”, but the lyrics are completely different. The same melody with different lyrics is also used in many other countries.

Like in Japan, the 1st of January is a national holiday in the UK. It's used to recover from the previous night's parties and to relax on the last day of holiday before going back to work on the 2nd of January.

I hope that I can meet even more people, learn more about Japan，and continue introducing British culture to the people of Kyotanabe in 2012.
