Reality is stranger than fiction」(現実は小説より面白い)

　もうすぐクリスマスですね。イギリスでは、お祝い気分が高まっています。

　イギリス人がクリスマスでイメージすることは、クリスマスツリー、プレゼント、ログファイヤー（暖炉の炎）、家族と一緒に過ごす時間とクリスマスディナー、そして雪です。しかし、実際にイギリスでクリスマスの日に雪が降ることはとても珍しく、毎年、賭けの対象となるほど、本当に雪は降りません。私がクリスマスの日に雪を見たのは、この10年間でたった1回です。

　また、クリスマスに女王のスピーチを聞く伝統があります。例年、12月25日の午後3時に放送して、女王が最近起こったことや興味のあることについて話したり、みんなが幸せなクリスマスとお正月を迎えることを願ったりします。

最初のラジオ放送でのクリスマススピーチは、1932年にジョージ5世が行いました。そして、1937年にジョージ6世（エリザベス2世の父）が行ったのが、昨年映画化された「英国王のスピーチ」です。

It’s nearly Christmas, and back in the UK, everyone is getting into the festive spirit.

              When British people think of Christmas, we think of Christmas trees, presents and log fires, of time spent with family, Christmas dinner and snow. But the truth is that it rarely snows on Christmas day in the UK! Snow falling on Christmas Day is so rare that there is even a bet on it. In the last 10 years, I’ve seen snow fall on Christmas Day only once.

              Another Christmas tradition in the UK is to listen to the Queen’s speech. Normally broadcast on Christmas day at 3pm, the Queen comments on recent events and things which interest her, and wishes everyone a good Christmas and a happy new year.

              The first Christmas speech was broadcast on the radio in 1932 by King George V. In 1937 King George VI (Queen Elizabeth II’s father) made his first Christmas speech radio broadcast. The 1937 speech was featured in the film “The King’s Speech” released last year.
