「Reality is stranger than fiction」(現実は小説より面白い)

イギリスらしいお祭り「ボンファイアーナイト（ガイ・フォークスナイト）」を紹介します。

　ボンファイアーナイトは、毎年11月5日に、お菓子を売る出店が並び、たき火をたき、花火を打ち上げて祝うお祭りです。イギリスのまちでは、11月5日とその前後の週末に、花火を上げるので、空は花火でいっぱいです。このお祭りは、イギリスだけでお祝いしているお祭りで、歴史的な背景がありますが、最近では、多くのイギリス人がこの背景を忘れています。

　1605年に、ガイ・フォークスという男性がイギリスの「Houses of Parliament」（国会議事堂）の爆発を企てました。幸いなことに、ガイ・フォークスが捕まって、その陰謀は失敗しました。その時から、イギリス人は毎年11月5日にガイ・フォークスの失敗を祝っています。

ボンファイアーナイトの話は、次の短い韻を踏んだ言葉で語り継がれています。

“Remember, remember the 5th of November,

This month I’d like to introduce a very British festival, Bonfire night (also known as Guy Fawkes Night).

              Bonfire Night takes place on the 5th of November every year, and is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and stalls selling sweets. Most towns have their own fireworks displays, as well as a large bonfire. On the 5th of November and the nearest weekend, the sky around towns and cities is full of fireworks. Bonfire Night is only celebrated in the UK and has historical links to the past, although most people forget this in the modern celebration.

              In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Fortunately, he was caught and the plot failed. From then on people in the UK have celebrated his failure on the 5th of November. The story of Bonfire Night is remembered by this short rhyme

“Remember, remember the 5th of November”
