[Nothing ventured, nothing gained!] (思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第11回

みなさん、お元気ですか？6月号にも少し書きましたが、私は8月1日で京田辺市国際交流員を退職します。だからこれが私の最後のコラムです。

今日まで、京田辺市での生活を通して日本について色々勉強することができました。また、みなさんにもイギリスの文化を紹介する機会がありました。

楽しい思い出がたくさんあります、その中でも一番うれしかったのは市民のみなさんとのふれあいでした。私のイベントや英会話教室に参加やしてくれた方々、あたたかい笑顔で歓迎をしてくれた子ども達、すべてのみなさんに心から感謝しています。京田辺市で勤めることができて、本当にありがたく思っています。

しかし、実は難しい時もありました。大きな文化の違いだけでなく、日本語で電話をすることなど、小さなことにも困ったことがありました。それでも、楽しく過ごすことができました、そして日本語も少し上達したように思います。

私の最後のお願いは、京田辺市の市民のみなさんがますます国際交流に興味を持つようになることです。私の後任の国際交流員も、私の時と同じようにあたたかく迎えてあげてください。

みなさん、1年間本当にお世話になりました。またいつか会いましょう。

How is everyone? I mentioned it in the column in June, but from the 1st of August I will be leaving my post as Kyotanabe’s CIR. So this will be my final column.

Up until now, I’ve learnt a lot about Japan by living in Kyotanabe, as well as having the opportunity to introduce British culture to everyone.

I’ve made lots of fun memories, but the best ones are the times I had contact with the people of Kyotanabe. To the people who came to my events and the English conversation class, and the children who gave me such warm and welcoming smiles, I’m so grateful to all of you.

However, there were also difficult times. Not just big cultural differences, even with such small things such as answering the phone in Japanese, there were sometimes problems. Even so, I was still able to have fun and I think I’ve improved my Japanese a little.

And finally, I hope that everyone comes to take more of an interest in international exchange. Please greet my successor with the same warm welcome you gave me.

Everyone, thankyou for all your help over the last year. Let’s meet again someday.
