「Reality is stranger than fiction」（現実は小説より面白い）

はじめまして、京田辺市のみなさん。8月から京田辺市でCIR（国際交流員）として働くことになったイギリス出身のニッキーです。これからみなさんといっぱい会って、この地域の文化と歴史について学びたいと思っています。

私はこれまで英語を母国語とするさまざまな国の人に会いましたが、それぞれの英語には、その国の特別な言葉と表現がありました。

例えば学生時代の話ですが、アメリカ出身のルームメイトは、ナスを「Eggplant」(エッグプラント)、ズッキーニのことを「Zuccini」（ズッキーニ）と呼んでいましたが、私はナスを「Aubergine」(オーバージーン)、ズッキーニを「Courgette」(コールジェット)と呼んでいました。同じ英語なのに互いの英語の言い方を知らなかったので、形と色を説明しあって、理解し合えることができました。

同じ英語でもこのような違いがあるので、日本とイギリスはもっと色々な違いがあると思います。このような違いや、似ている点を楽しみながら、これから一年間みなさんと交流したいと思います。よろしくお願いします。

Hello everyone. My name is Nikki Kopelman and I am the new CIR for Kyotanabe starting from this August. I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible this year and learning about this region’s culture and history.

Since I arrived in Japan, I have met many other people from English-speaking countries who have come to Japan. They were from different countries, but they were all native English speakers. However, the kind of English they spoke varied according to the country the person came from, all with their own particular words and expressions.

For example, when I was a student my American flatmate was always using the words “eggplant” , and“zucchini”, but in British English we say "aubergine" and "courgette". Even though we were both native English speakers, we didn't know what the word was in the other English, so we had to describe the objects until we understood one another!

Some people may not have known there are these types of differences in English. I think that although there are also a lot of differences and similarities between the UK and Japan. Over the next year I hope to meet many people, and learn about these differences and similarities together.
