[Nothing ventured, nothing gained!] (思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第9回

今月は最近気になることについて話したいと思います。

それは、動物のことです。日本人はイギリス人と同じように、ペットが好きですね。ペットをいっぱいかわいがると、飼っている人も元気になります。「ペットは家族の一員だ」とたくさんの日本人は言います。

しかし、公園では野良猫をよく見かけます。

イギリスには英国王立動物虐待防止協会（RSPCA）があります。捨て犬・猫の里親探しなどを行う協会です。この協会の活動により、イギリスの公園には野良犬・猫は1匹もいないというくらいです。

そしてイギリスでは、ペットストアで犬・猫を売るのは禁止されています。犬や猫を飼いたいときはRSPCAで無料で譲り受けるか直接ブリーダーに行くしかありません。また、犬や猫を捨てる人に法律は大変厳しくて、懲役刑を宣告される上、動物を一生飼うのを禁止される可能性があります。

猫が大好きな私は、公園の野良猫を初めて見たとき、かわいそうに思って涙が出てしまいました。しかし、そのような野良犬・猫のお世話をしているやさしい人を見かけて、「やはり日本にも動物が好きな人はたくさんいる」と私は安心しました。

みなさんも、ペットを大切にしてあげてください。

This month I’d like to talk about animals, as they have been on my mind recently. Japanese people and British people both really love their pets. Looking after a pet is very healing to the owner, too. There are a lot of people in Japan who say “A pet is a member of the family!”

 However, I often see abandoned cats in parks here.

 In the UK, we have a charity called the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). They work to rehome unwanted pets. Thanks to them, you won’t see stray cats or dogs in British parks.

 The sale of cats or dogs is forbidden in UK pet stores. When you want to get a pet, you can either get one for free from the RSPCA, or go directly to a breeder. Furthermore, UK law is extremely harsh on people who abandon animals. As well as a prison sentence, people can be banned from owning a pet for the rest of their life.

 I love cats very much, so the first time I saw abandoned cats in parks in Japan, I was very upset. But I also saw that there are people who come around and care for them, so this reassured me that Japan is full of animal loving people.
