[Nothing ventured, nothing gained!] (思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第8回

イギリス人は、「天気について熱心です」と言われます。イギリスは、天気が悪い国です。そのため、みんなが天気のことで不平を言うので、イギリス人に一体感が生まれます。確かに会話を始めるには便利です。日本人でも「今日は寒い（暑い）ですねえ」とよく言うので、イギリス人と似ています。いつも晴れている国の人は、「何の話題から会話を始めるの？」と疑問に思います。

また、最初日本に来たときに、「イギリス人と違って、日本人はあまり知らない人と話さない」と私は思っていましたが、間違いだと気づきました。確かに、深い会話はしないけれども、日本人は天気などの話題から知らない人とも会話します。「日本人は遠慮がち」と思われますが、実はイギリス人と同じかもしれません　(もちろん、イギリス人はアメリカ人などより物静かとも言えます。) それでも、やはり世界中の人は何か似ているところがあるので、みんな人間で、みんな友達だと思います。

  People say that the British are passionate about the weather. It’s true, the weather in Britain is bad. When we all complain about it, it gives us a sense of togetherness. It’s certainly handy for striking up a conversation. Japanese people do the same- “It’s cold/hot today, isn’t it?” Maybe they are similar to the Brits. I sometimes wonder what people from countries with perpetually clear weather find to talk about.

  When I first came to Japan, I thought “Japanese people don’t really talk to people they don’t know”, but as time passed I realized I was mistaken. Of course, they don’t have deep conversations, but will chat about the weather and so on. People say “Japanese people are reserved” but I think they are on a similar level to the Brits. (But of course you might also say that the British are more reserved than, for example, Americans.) Regardless, I think all people have these various things in common no matter what country they’re from. In that sense you could say that we’re not so different after all.
