[Nothing ventured, nothing gained!] (思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第7回

  イギリスでは人口が増加しているので、どこに行っても子どもがたくさんいます。しかし少子化が進む日本では子どもが少ないように感じます。そのせいか、イギリスより日本の子どもは大切にされているような気がします。そして、日本の今時の子ども達には、日本以外の国の文化を感じる機会がたくさんあるように思います。

　日本の若い人たちは、自分たちと違う外国人に会ってもあまり驚かないし、さまざまな外国語の発音に自然と出会い、それらの知識をスポンジのように吸収します。それは、すばらしいことだと思います。

　イギリスは多文化社会なので、私にはインド人、アフリカ人、パキスタン人など色々な国の出身の友達がいました。そして、イギリスは誰でもイギリス人になることができる国なので、自分と友達が“違う”とは思いませんでした。

　日本は今も外国出身の人が少ない国ですが、子どものうちに多文化を知って成長すると世界で活躍する大人になれるかもしれません。そして、世界中に日本の文化が広がっていけばそれはとても良いことだと私は思っています。

私も国際交流員として、保育園や幼稚園を訪問すると元気な子ども達から、たくさんのエネルギーを貰っています。

  Due to the increase in population, the UK is full of children. Japan on the other hand seems to have significantly less, as the issue of falling birthrate continues. Perhaps that’s why I get the impression that children are more cherished in Japan.   The children of today also have more opportunities to experience different cultures.

   Young people in Japan are less likely to be fazed by meeting someone from another country, and they possess an innate ability to pick up natural sounding intonation when it comes to foreign languages. You could say they are like sponges able to soak up knowledge, which I think is a wonderful thing.

  The UK is a multicultural society, and when I was growing up I had friends of Indian, African, and Pakistani heritage. The UK is a widely accepting country where anyone can become British, so I didn’t feel such a strong sense of ‘difference’ between myself and my friends.

  Japan is still a country with comparatively few people of non-Japanese heritage, but its citizens now more than ever have the ability to learn about other cultures in childhood and go on to become globally mobile adults. Hopefully in this way they can also spread Japanese culture across the world at the same time.
