[Nothing ventured, nothing gained!] (思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第6回

みなさん一番好きな季節は何ですか？8月生まれの私は、夏が好きです。そして、子供の頃から苦手なのは冬でした。しかし、最近考えが変わりそうです。

イギリスの冬はとても寒くて、日が短くて、空が灰色で、気持ちが落ち込んだりします。家の中にはセントラルヒーティングがあるので、家を出なくなり、まるで冬眠をしているようです。少しの楽しみは、自宅には暖炉もあって、猫と一緒に前に座って本を読むことです。

日本の冬には、イギリスで手に入らない寒さに対抗する2つの武器があると思います。1つ目はこたつです。もしできれば、春までこたつから出たくないぐらいすてきです。もう1つの武器はカイロ。イギリスでは見たことがなかったので、2年前留学生の頃に道で知らない優しいおばさんに「寒そうだから、カイロをあげる」って言われた時、「なにこれ？魔法みたい」って思いました。だから最近は、日本の冬は悪くないと思うようになりました。しかし、やっぱり春を楽しみにしています。京田辺の桜を見ることが、今から楽しみです。

What’s your favourite season? I was born in August, so I like summer. Since I was little, I’ve always disliked winter, but recently I’ve started to change my mind.

 Winters in Britain are extremely cold, with short days and grey skies, which can get depressing. British homes have central heating, so people more or less hibernate indoors. My idea of winter fun is reading a good book in front of our coal fire with one of our cats.

 Japan has two weapons against winter cold that you won’t find in Britain. The first is the kotatsu, or heated table. I love kotatsu so much I’d like to stay under mine until the spring. The second is kairo, or hand warmers. I had never seen one before coming to Japan. Two years ago while I was studying abroad in Tokyo, a nice lady on the street told me I looked cold and gave me a kairo. I thought it was like magic. Therefore  I’ve recently started to think that Japan’s winters aren’t half bad. Still, I’m looking forward to spring. I’m especially excited to see Kyotanabe’s cherry blossoms.
