「Nothing ventured, nothing gained!」（思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第3回

大学時代に、授業で日本の新聞の外来語についてのコラムを読みました。ある読者の意見は「外来語が多すぎて分からない」というものでした。確かに外来語の数が本当に多いと感じます。しかし、外来語の多い日本語は外国人にとって分かりやすい言語だと思います。そして外来語の多くは英語から来ていますので、イギリス人の私はとても助かりました。

日本語が分からない父が、日本に旅行したときに、デパートのレジに行って、「Card… ok？」って聞いたところ、「はい、カードはオッケーです」という返事が来ました。それで私に笑いかけて、「ほら、聞いた？おとうさんは日本語がしゃべれるぞ！」と誇らしげに言いました。

しかし、問題は日本で使われている外来語のいくつかは、英語を話す人にとって意味がわからない場合もあるということです。例えば私が最初に日本に来たとき「ホッチキス」の意味が全然分かりませんでした。英語では「stapler」（ステープラー）です。そして、「コンセント」も分かりませんでした。正しい英語は「plug socket」（プラグソケット）です。フランス語からきた「アンケート」とドイツ語からきた「アルバイト」にも戸惑いました。外国人と話す時には外来語にあまり甘え過ぎない方がいいかもしれません。

Back in university, I read a Japanese newspaper article in class about gairaigo (Japanese words of foreign origin). One contributor to the article said, “There’s so much gairaigo about now, I don’t understand anything anymore”. It’s true that there is a lot of gairaigo in the Japanese language these days. But I do think that it makes the Japanese language more accessible to foreigners. And, since a large proportion of gairaigo come from English words, it has helped me out a lot.

Once, on holiday in Japan, I was shopping with my dad (who doesn’t speak Japanese). At the cash register, he asked “card…ok?” to which the salesperson replied “hai, kaado wa okke desu”. My dad turned to me with a triumphant grin and said, “Hear that? Your dad speaks Japanese!”

The problem with gairaigo, however, is that some of the gairaigo used in Japan doesn’t make any sense to English speakers. For example, when I first came to Japan, I had no idea what a “Hocchikisu” (Hotchkiss) was, because in English we say “stapler”. Similarly, I didn’t understand what a “konsento” (lit: Concentric plug) was, because the correct English usage is “plug socket”. The French-derived “ankeeto” (enquête, questionnaire) and the German-origin “arubaito” (arbeit, work) caused me similar confusion. Perhaps, then, it is not a good idea to rely too much on gairaigo when it comes to speaking English.
