「Nothing ventured, nothing gained!」（思い切ってなさねば得るところなし）第2回

京田辺市で仕事を始めたばかりの私は、最近あることに気付きました。それは日本語の「ワーク・ライフ・バランス」という言葉です。英語では使わない表現ですが、分かりやすい言葉なのですぐ理解できました。今は日本で働いていますので、日本人のワーク・ライフ・バランスに対する意識をもっと知りたいという気持ちがあります。

イギリスでは、「残業」のような言葉はまったく使われていないです。イギリスの職場では、時間になったらみんな出口へダッシュと言えるかもしれません。仕事が本当に好きな人は少ないという気がします。

イギリスでよく知られている私の好きな表現を紹介します。「好きな仕事さえ見つければ、人生は一日も働かない」(Find a job you like and you’ll never work a day in your life)。

イギリスでは、日本人は仕事熱心というイメージがあります。しかし、義理で仕事に熱心か、仕事が好きという理由で熱心か、分かりません。もう一つの好きな表現は、「仕事を頑張る、そして遊びも頑張る」（Work hard, play hard）。

みなさん、「Work hard, play hard」をしていますか？

Having just begun working in Kyotanabe, I have recently become aware of the Japanese phrase "work-life balance". It's not a phrase we use in English, but I understood its meaning straight away. Since I'm working in a Japanese workplace, I'm curious about people's perceptions of "work-life balance". In English, we don't have terms such as "Zangyou" (after-hours work). In the UK, you could sometimes say that there's a mass dash to the exits at the end of the working day! I don't feel that there are many people in the UK who really enjoy their jobs. I'd like to share with you a popular saying from home that I like a lot. "Find a job you like and you’ll never work a day in your life".

 In the UK, Japanese people are perceived as hard workers. Do they work hard out of a sense of duty, or do they simply love to work? We don't know.

I want to leave you with another favourite phrase of mine. "Work hard, play hard". It means to give equal attention to both work and recreation.
