「Time flies...When you're having fun!!!」　(光陰矢のごとし...それは楽しい時)　第10回

みなさん、こんにちは。いよいよ暖かくなってきましたね。そこで私を熱くさせる話題、ステレオタイプ（つまり固定観念）について書きたいと思います。

イギリス人は日本と言えば昔の寿司・芸者、現代のアニメ・電気製品を連想します。でも日本で生活している私がイギリス人に日本を説明する時、「京都に行っても舞妓さんは滅多に見れない」とか「本当は日本人が寿司よりイタリア料理やインド料理のような物を食べている」と言わないといけません…

同様に、日本人はイギリスと言われたら、フィッシュ・アンド・チップス、紳士、紅茶などをイメージします。しかし、実は最も人気のある食べ物はインド・カレーで、毎日午後に豪華なハイ・ティー（高級な紅茶）の習慣を守っているのは高級なカフェだけです。

このように、ステレオタイプに本当の要素があっても、日常生活を正確に映し出しているとは限りません。それを理解した上で外国の人々と交流をすれば「こんなはずじゃなかった」と驚くことは少なくなり、本当に面白くて有意義な交流になると思います！

最後に、残念な報告が一つあります。私は自分の将来を考えて7月末にヨーロッパに帰ることにしました。これからも勉強して国際交流にかかわる仕事に就きたいと思っています。京田辺での1年間は非常に良かったです。残り1ヶ月ちょっと市民のみなさんと一緒にもっともっと良い思い出をいっぱい作りたいと思っています。

Hello, everyone. The weather has finally got warmer, hasn’t it? In keeping, I’d like to talk about something that gets me fired up: stereotypes.

British people associate Japan with the sushi and geisha of old and modern anime and electronics. But having lived in Japan myself, I have to explain that even in Kyoto you rarely see maiko, or that really Japanese people eat Italian or Indian food more than sushi. Similarly, Japanese people think of fish and chips, gentlemen and tea when they hear the name “Great Britain2. However, the most popular food in Britain is actually Indian curry, and the only places that still adhere to the extravagant custom of High Tea every afternoon are high-end cafés.

Thus, even if there are some elements of truth to stereotypes, they do not accurately reflect real life. I think that if we understand this before interacting with foreigners, perhaps we won’t be shocked by as many unexpected discoveries, but we will experience interesting and meaningful international exchange.

Lastly, I have some sad news. After thinking about my future, I have decided to return to Europe at the end of July. I hope to study further and get another job that involves international exchange. My year in Kyotanabe has been wonderful. There is only just over a month left now, but I still hope to make many more good memories with you, the people of Kyotanabe.
