「Time flies...When you're having fun!!!」　(光陰矢のごとし...それは楽しい時)　第9回

今月は外来語について話します。外国人は漢字に苦労すると思われていますが、カタカナの外来語もなかなか理解しがたいです。

悲しいことに一つ問題なのは日本人の気遣いです。日本人は外国人と会話するとき、自分が知っている英単語を使って会話をしようとします。しかしそれでは外国人はその言葉が日本語として通用する外来語だと誤解する可能性があります。

それに外来語は原語の意味と異なる場合が多いので、誤解することもあり得ます。このような意味の違う外来語は、とても面白いです。例えば、「テンションが高い」という表現です。これは日本人が盛り上がっているという意味ですが、英語では決して良い意味になりません！「Tension」は緊張という意味で、高ければ元気どころかストレスが溜まります。他に「スマート」ですが、残念ながら日本語の「痩せている」という意味はありません。（「Smart」は頭が良い、または御洒落という意味です。）そして来日して長く誤解していたのは「サービス」です。日本語では日常会話で「無料」という意味を持ちます。この場合に英語で「free」または「complimentary」を使います。

このようなことで外国語を習う時につまずくこともありますが、とても面白い発見もあります。みなさんも、面白い話や例があれば是非聞かせてくださいね。

This month I would like to talk about words of foreign origin in Japanese. Many people believe that foreigners have the most trouble with Chinese characters, but in fact imported words are hard to get a grip on too.

Unfortunately, one problem is that Japanese people are too considerate: they try to use the English words they know when talking to foreigners. However, because of this, the listener may mistakenly assume that the English word is one of the many Japanese imported words.

Many imported words also have a different meaning to their original counterpart, so the listener may misunderstand the phrase altogether. It's these katakana words that are the most interesting. For example, there is the phrase, "high tension". In Japanese this means that someone is getting excited and having a good time, but in English it definitely doesn't mean anything good! If your tension is high, it means that you're not happy, but stressed. Then there is "smart". Unfortunately it doesn't mean "thin" like in Japanese. ("Smart" either means "clever" or "dressed up".) Another word that often confused me long after coming to Japan is "service". In Japanese it means "for free" in everyday speech. However, in English one would use "free" or "complimentary" instead.

Thus, there are stumbling blocks when studying a foreign language, but there are also many interesting discoveries too. If you have any funny stories or examples please let me know!
