「Time flies...When you're having fun!!!」　(光陰矢のごとし...それは楽しい時)　第8回

みなさん、こんにちは。暖かくなりましたね。イギリスの冬は日本より長く、春が来た時に「春が跳ね上がった」（Spring has sprung.）と言います。

イギリス人は春が大好きで、興奮し、まだ早いのに、晴れている日に薄着をする人もいます。イギリスにも桜がありますが、日本と違って春の代表的な物ではありません。代わりに、春の象徴がキリスト教の復活祭（イースター）から連想されます。このために春になったらお店や学校で卵、ヒヨコ、ウサギ、子羊の絵などが飾ってあります。

日本では春に花見が必ずありますね。イギリスは自然が多く、大都市ロンドンでも広くて有名な公園や植物園があります。しかし、このような所で花を見ながら飲食をする習慣がありません。イギリス人は特に散歩が好きで、日本人と同様、春や夏に外で飲食をします。それは何百年前からの楽しみの一つ、ピクニックです。

みなさんもピクニックはいかがですか。イギリスではキュウリのサンドウィッチ、リンゴや白ブドウにチーズ、ワインや紅茶などを飲食しながら、家族やカップルや友人たちがゆっくりと久しぶりの日差しを浴び、ゲームも一緒にします。とても楽しい時ですが、日焼け止めを忘れないでくださいね！

Hello, everyone. The weather has finally got a little warmer, hasn't it? Winter in the UK lasts longer than in Japan, and when it finally comes around, we say "Spring has sprung!".

The British love spring. Some people get so excited that they wear summer clothes on sunny days despite the fact that it is still too cold. There are cherry trees in the UK, but they do not represent spring the way they do in Japan. Instead, the symbols of spring are associated with the Christian celebration of Easter. That is why shops and schools are decorated with eggs, chicks, bunnies and lambs in spring.

In Japan, spring means hanami. In the UK, there is plenty of nature and even a big city like London has big famous parks and botanical gardens, but British people do not go to these places to eat and drink while looking at the blossoms. They particular enjoy taking walks, but like the Japanese they occassionally eat outdoors in spring and summer: instead of hanami they have picnics, a centuries-old leisure activity.

Why don't you try having a picnic too? In the UK people eat cucumber sandwiches and cheese with apple or grapes, and drink wine or tea while soaking up some long-awaited sun and playing games with their friends, family or as a couple. It's a lot of fun - just don't forget your sunscreen!
