「Time flies...When you're having fun!!!」　(光陰矢のごとし...それは楽しい時)　第2回

今月は、私が改めて日本の文化に驚いたことについて書きます。先日、救急救命講習に参加して大変勉強になりましたが、欧米と異なるところに気づきました。

最初に不思議に思ったのは、12人の参加者が6人ずつのグループではなく、女性7人と男性5人に分かれたことです。欧米では、小中学生の時に女性と男性は恥ずかしがってあまり混ざりませんが、高校に入ったら教師は男子と女子が励まし合うように敢えて混ぜたグループを作ります。そして大人になってからは、仕事でも社交的な場面でも男性・女性、分かれることは滅多にないです。

次に驚いたのは、緊急のロールプレイでの敬語でした。参加者は助けを頼む時に「お願いします」と言ったり、AEDを使う時に「離れて、押すね」ではなくて「離れてください。はい、押します」と言いました。ヨーロッパの言語にも丁寧な言葉と表現があり、相手と場面に応じて使います。しかし、緊急の際は時間が勿体無いので、使わないことが普通です。逆に日本人は緊急時でも敬語を使うことに驚きました。

みなさんはどう思いますか。自分にとって「当然」という事でも他の国の人には違うと気づけば、世界にはさまざまな文化や生き方があることに改めて気づくかもしれません。

This month I would like to write about an aspect of Japanese culture which surprised me. The other day I attended a first aid course. I learnt a lot, but also noticed things that would be different in the West.

The first thing I found strange was that the 12 participants did not split into two groups of six, but into seven women and five men. In the West, lower and middle school boys and girls can get embarrassed and do not often mix, but in high school, teachers actively put together mixed groups so that boys and girls learn to get along. Thus, whether at work or in a social situation, it is rare for adults to separate into men and women.

I was also surprised by the use of keigo ("polite language") during the emergency role plays. When asking for help, the participants politely said please, and when using the AED, announced, "Please stay back. I am going to push the button," rather than calling out, "Clear!" In European languages too there are polite words and phrases used according to the listener and the situation. But in an emergency, they are not used in order to save time. I was shocked that Japanese people use keigo even in situations like this.
